Everything that you need to know about Iphone

What was to be a cat-and-mouse game between Apple and the iPhone hackers is turning out to be a formula 1 race between iPhone hackers. We are hearing that all is not right in the iPhone hacking community and has already resulted in a breakout group over @ toc2rta releasing their jailbreak method that combines the symlink hack with a TIFF vulnerability found in the iPhone v1.1.1 firmware's mobile Safari.

The iphone Dev Team was quick to respond by releasing their own method to jailbreak your iPhone on firmware 1.1.1. Find out all the details of their method after the jump.

The iPhone Dev Team's method is currently applicable to iPhone's that do not have their baseband modified as the iPhone Dev Team claim that "Apple has designed the 1.1.1 upgrade to permanently brick iPhones that have had their baseband modified to unlock the SIM."

The following is the summary of the steps that the iPhone hackers have explained in great detail in the readme document:

  1. Downgrading to 1.0.2 (if necessary)
  2. Preparing the iPhone for a jailbroken update
  3. Performing a software update, leaving you with a jailbroken v1.1.1
  4. Forcing v1.1.1 to mount read-write so you can access it
  5. Installing SSH and BSD world
  6. Activating with a Non-ATT SIM
  7. Patching SpringBoard to allow third-party applications
  8. Clean-up

I am not sure about you but the latest series of iPhone hacks/jailbreaks have got me confused, so I will try to demystify it somewhat. Since Apple released iPhone firmware 1.1.1, we have seen not one but 3 ways of jailbreaking the iPhone.

The three jailbreaking methods are as mentioned below:

  • This was followed by a step by step guide over at iPhoneAlley to jailbreak the iPhone. However this method apparently is an early method of the iPhone Dev Team which seems to have been leaked.
  • The third and hopefully the last one is iPhone Dev Team's jailbreaking method summarized above.

It is difficult to say which one is the best but folks @ iPhoneSIMFree have incidentally used iPhone Dev Team's jailbreaking method to successfully unlock the iPhone with firmware 1.1.1.

If you are not so technically inclined, I would again recommend you to wait as it is better to have iPhone applications like the Installer.app/AppTap for firmware 1.1.1 which will also make it easy to install third-party iPhone applications.

However, if you are the adventurous types and want to try out iPhone Dev team's method then check out this zip file for the hacking procedure (mirror here).

iPhone firmware 1.1.1 has brought in a great deal of disappointment for iPhone owners, not only did it partially brick the unlocked iPhones (apparently maliciously) where the unlocking mechanism of the iPhone Dev Team was used it also has made all the cool iPhone hacks unusable.

Apple seems to have missed the pulse of the iPhone owners as what made the iPhone truly revolutionary was not just the iPhone but was also because of the cool iPhone applications that were released by the iPhone hacking community.

Lets have a look at what's on offer with iPhone 1.1.1 in comparison to the hacked iPhone.

As can be seen below, folks at Wired have put together a very cool at-a-glance checklist image (based on ) which gives a good comparison on what the iPhone 1.1.1 has to offer in comparison to the hacked iPhone (firmware 1.0.2). The breaking news on iPhone's firmware update bricking unlocked iPhone's and making iPhone hacks unusable has seen a overwhelming response; I must admit I haven't observed so must disgust shown by Apple's lovers before.

It might be foolish for Apple to think that they have won the cat and mouse game Steve Jobs talked about recently as it is killer applications like YouTube or Google Maps on the iPhone or SlingPlayer Mobile on Nokia N95 that will make them revolutionary. Its not just the hardware that will be enough to achieve greatness but you need software too to compliment the hardware.

Hacked iPhone VS iPhone 1.1.1

Here is a list of iPhone hacks and applications which had made the iPhone truly revolutionary so far:

Carrier and Cheap Roaming:

You could use any GSM provider SIM with the options mentioned below:

anySIM 1.0.2 - Free GUI based iPhone SIM unlock tool:

After approximately two and half months of hard work, the iPhone Dev Team have achieved their objective of unlocking the iPhone, they have just announced the free GUI based iPhone SIM unlock tool called "anySIM" for complete freedom from AT&T. For more details click here.

iPhoneSIMFree - iPhone software-only SIM unlocking hack:

After quite a few delays resulting in many doubting the authenticity of the hack which resulted in numerous videos to prove that it was for real, the software-only unlocking hack from iPhoneSIMFree is finally available for individual iPhone users via four online retailers across the globe. For more details click here.

Instant Messaging:

MobileChat: Native Instant Messaging client for iPhone:

Hackers @ Twenty08 have released the latest iPhone hack called "MobileChat" which is the second native IM client since ApolloIM was released. Click here for more details.

Apollo IM: First unauthorized Instant Messaging client for iPhone:

iPhone hacking community has been busy releasing native iPhone applications after the first "Hello World" application. The latest iPhone hack is interestingly the first native iPhone instant messaging client called "Apollo IM". Apollo v1.0 also supported AIM, ICQ, and MSN with Jabber expected soon. Click here for more details.

Retrogaming:

Release Candidate 1 of Nintendo emulator for the iPhone released

The iPhone hacking community had brought the Nintendo emulator to the iPhone couple of weeks back, however, it was still early days for the iPhone hack. Nervegas has been working on enhancing it and the iPhone hacking genius who had taken stepwhite's iPhoneNES program and rewritten to make it to make it run fast has just released 0.99.00 version of the release, ready for prime-time or to put it more appropriately, Release Candidate 1 for NES emulator is now available. Click here for more details.

Command Line:

ssh on iPhone:

Over at the #iphone channel at irc.osx86.hu, the thoroughly awesome NerveGas has figured out how to enable ssh on the iPhone without using restore mode. The secret lies in overwriting an existing binary and plist to trick the iPhone into calling chmod on the Dropbear ssh server and making it executable. Follow this link for more details.

Remote Desktop:

VNSea:

VNsea is a graphical (duh) VNC client for the iPhone and presumably the iPod touch, based on Chicken of the VNC for Mac OS X. Follow this link for more details.

Global Positioning:

Latest iPhone Hack brings Navizon's Virtual GPS to iPhone:

One of features missing from the iPhone's rich feature list is a Global Positioning System (GPS), which is now rumored will be available only in the 2nd generation iPhone sometime next year along with 3G support. However, if you have already bought the iPhone and can't wait then there is some good news for you as an alternative is now available. The latest iPhone hack has made it possible to bring Navizon's Virtual GPS to the iPhone. For more details click here.

Voice Recorder:

Steve Jobs promises iPhone voice recorder, hacker delivers:

If you did not find the iPhone voice recorder which Steve Jobs had promised when he announced the iPhone in his Keynote address in January, don't worry as Erica Sadun from Tuaw has just developed the latest iPhone hack, the iPhone voice recorder. Click here for more details.

IRC:

IRC on iPhone:

If you are one of those who are hooked on to IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and are on the lookout for new applications for your iPhone, then there is some good news. Folks at GearLive have published a tutorial to help you get IRC running on your iPhone. Click here for more details.

eBook Reader:

iPhoneeBooks

A native eBook reader for the iPhone. Capable of reading HTML and plain text stored on your iPhone. Click here for more details.

File Browser:

iFuntastic v2.5 now also has a iPhone file browser

One of the coolest hacking tool to be released for the iPhone has been iFuntastic as it bought GUI  to iPhone hacks thus making it possible for the not so technically inclined to use them. We had v2.1 which had the capabilities of adding custom ringtones, changing carrier logo and reordering application icons on iPhone's home screen. bitSpilt, has now released v2.5.0 of the tool with a new feature: a full iPhone file browser. For more details click here.

Note: Office reference and Delete menu items has not been covered due to lack of information, in case you can any information on these hacks please do share them them in the comments.

And now lets have a look at the new features introduced with iPhone Firmware 1.1.1:

  • iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
  • Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
  • Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites of music controls
  • Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
  • Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
  • Stocks and cities in Stocks and Waether can be re-ordered
  • Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
  • Support for TV Out
  • Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
  • New Passcode lock time intervals
  • Adjustable alert volume

I guess other than iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store (which too you can live without) nothing earth shattering to really convince anyone to update your iPhone with this latest firmware in case they are enjoying the iPhone applications mentioned above or have unlocked their iPhone.

I would agree with Brian Lam of Gizmodo that it is understandable from Apple's point of view to try and block users from unlocking their iPhone's as it directly impacts their revenues from fees with AT&T (though), but there isn't any justification to wipe out the cool iPhone applications especially when they haven't really delivered anything significant with regards to applications for the iPhone since its launch.

I read somewhere an article which had the subject line of the firmware fiasco as "iPhone Hackers - 1 and Apple Engineers - 1", in my opinion for Apple Engineers to be given 1 point they need to turn all those red crosses into green ticks.

If you are iPhone owner it would be great to know in the comments if you stuck with your hacked iPhone or you updated your iPhone to firmware 1.1.1 and the reason for making that choice.

Downgrade 1.1.1 to 1.0.2

By Coool Dude

Downgrade guide:

http://iphone.fiveforty.net/wiki/ind...1.1.1_to_1.0.2

Thanks for Kmac1985 for discovering this.

P.S.: This does NOT downgrade your baseband. Fixes for bb will follow asap.*

*This means you cannot fix 0049 issue atm, reunlock or do similar things involving the baseband yet.

Hi all, just finished writing the following guide. posted it on the blog: http://coolblog.profit42.com/2007/09...latest-anysim/ so if you want to link to it, please link to my blog, though I understand the community feeling so here's the same guide (clickable links on the blogpost, I'll add them to this forum post later, it doesn't autoplace the bbcode...):

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

=== REGARDING THE 1.1.1 FIRMWARE ===

This guide tells you how to restore to 1.0.2 and how to ignore the 1.1.1 update. Never upgrade to 1.1.1!!!

The guide assumes that the phone that you are using hasn't got 1.1.1 already on it. if you purchased the phone before today, you won't need to worry about that.

=== CREDITS ===

I didn't found out all this stuff on my own. This guide is based on carlosvaldosta's guide. I added a few steps to make the process working even now when iTunes restores your iPhone to 1.1.1 and made some steps a little bit clearer, with help from people on the forums. I also point to AnySim instead of unlock-fast. AnySim is from the same creators, though newer.

If this guide really helped you out and you want to say thank you, donate the so called DEV Team they made all this stuff possible (they made AnySim, the jailbreak technique etc.). If you still got some spare money and like this site, you can always donate me (see philanthropy above) and I'll really appreciate it, but donate the dev team first.

=== IMPORTANT INFO ===

Do not even dare to skip a step because you think that you're smart. Read the whole guide before taking the phone out of the box and then read everything twice again before doing something.

This guide is for Windows computers and brand new iPhones. If you did an unlock on your iPhone, you need to do a virgin restore before trying this. And no, that's not an iTunes restore.

Do not ask why I use AppTapp and iBrickr. There are quite many ways leading to Rome... I unlocked my iPhone this way and it worked. AppTapp and iBrickr are also both great programs so I don't see a reason for leaving them off your phone.

=== REQUIREMENTS ===

- AppTapp
- iBrickr
- PACAY (aka 'point and click activation with youtube')
- AnySim 1.0.2 (pxl version)
- iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw

==== THE GUIDE ===

1) Start iTunes, go to help > about iTunes and check if you have iTunes 7.4.1.2. If not, remove iTunes and download and install version 7.4.1.2.

2) Close iTunes. Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE, find iTunesHelper.exe under processes and terminate it.

3) Open the box with your brand new iPhone. Show it to the persons in your house and tell them that you are going to unlock it now. Put a 'do not disturb' sign on your door and plug in the USB end of the cable that came with your iPhone in an USB port in your computer.

4) Press and hold both the power and home button on your iPhone, till you see a yellow triangle.. Plug the other end of the cable in the iPhone (and keep the phone plugged in during the entire unlock process, so 'till the end of this guide).

5) Open iTunes. Hold shift and click restore and select the iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw firmware file. DO NOT RESTORE TO FIRMWARE VERSION 1.1.1, post a comment if the shift thingy isn't working! Follow the steps on your screen to restore the iPhone. Make sure that it restores to firmware version 1.0.2.

6) Once the restore is finished, you'll see the activation screen on the iPhone again. Close iTunes (and the iTunesHelper.exe) and start AppTapp (you downloaded this file).

7) Hit continue. Select the 1.0.2 firmware. Hit continue again. Now AppTapp will start copying the files. Due to some bad coding the progress bar isn't really working. When your iPhone goes to the yellow triangle screen and then back to the activation screen, then wait 120 seconds and check if AppTapp says completed (bar won't be full), then close AppTapp.

8 ) Go to the folder where you extracted PACAY and start "(CLICK HERE) activate.bat". Follow the steps on your screen. When it asks to power the iPhone off and on again: Hold the power button on the phone, slide the red slider, wait about 15 seconds and power the phone on again.

9) Open iBrickr, select applications and install the installer. Follow the on screen instructions.

10) Go back to iBrickr's home screen and hit applications again. Browse to the AnySim pxl and hit install.

11) On you iPhone, you'll see an AnySim icon now! Don't click it yet! Go to (on the phone) settings > general > auto-lock and select never.

12) Press the home button and hit AnySim. Follow the steps on your screen and unlock the phone! Do not stop the process and do not start it twice!

13) When the unlock is completed, press the home button and shut down your iPhone.

14) Take out the AT&T SIM by putting a paper clip in the little hole next to the power button of the phone. Insert your own SIM in the holder and place it back in the phone.

15) Turn on your phone and check if you can make a call! If you get the "SIM Locked" error, just enter the SIM's PIN code (which you setup on your previous phone or is still the default 0000).

16) If you don't want EDGE or want to prevent unpayable bills, go to setting > general > network > edge and remove all setting there.

17) Reboot your iPhone.

18) Start iBrickr again if you closed it. Go to applications and press the red circle next to AnySim to remove it.

19) Close iBrickr, unplug the iPhone and remove the plastic on the phone.

20) Play with your brand new iPhone! You'll see an icon called installer on your springboard. Open it and install the community sources. Now you'll have access to hunderds of brand new iPhone programs! But watch out! Don't install them like a madman, check their sites for bugs and check if they are safe! Go to the hackint0sh forums for support.

1) Iphone with firmware 1.0.1
2) Work PC -->WinXP
3) For first activation I used DVD Jon Method.
4) Next jailbreak and fakeactivate -->http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_...r_windows.html, also you need to replace 'lockdownd' under /usr/libexec/ with http://cuimengsuo.com/wp-content/upl.../lockdownd.zip, to prevent further activation checks (backup the original lockdownd)
5) Ordered Dynamite Writer + 2 Silver cards, received it after 6 days(88$, no CUST)
6) Next thing I see is the serial interface of Dynamite Writer is not working.
7) Did everything I could do, from building my own serial cables to switching PC’s for serial Interface, but nothing worked.
8) Remembered that SIM reader was available in SP Road from my last SC writer hunt 3 weeks back, kicked my RX and went flying and got SIM reader(NextTech, 325/-), it provides virtual COM interface.
9) Ran worn scan and worked like chram with SIM Reader, had ‘ki’ of two sim’s within 30 minutes.
10) Next just followed “Tutorial" http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=2215 that’s it, within 5 minutes I flashed the silvercard.
11) Next cut the card, insert into iPhone and make calls, sms
12) For EDGE, got to Settings->General->Network->Edge apn (airtelgprs.com), username(blank), password(blank)
13) For YouTube see http://hackint0sh.org/forum/showthre...=theThreeFiles

I can lend my writer to ppl from Bangalore, or anyone who is flying down to Bangalore from anywhere in India

Just order silvercard (~10$) and get your iPhone working, may be few ppl can join and do a bulk order.

Till you get your cards you can get NextTech SIM reader and find 'ki', should be available @mobile electronics shops in your town. If you are from Bangalore I can give you directions.

Sachin,
Thanks, WinXp is better since all these reader/writer drivers work with WinXP

iPhone Wallpapers

By Coool Dude

Customizing your iPhone is bound to become a big business and one of the first things you’ll probably want to change is your wallpaper. There are a few places to get iPhone wallpapers, one such site is the unimaginatively but aptly named Free iPhone Wallpapers.

You can grab the iPhone restore package at:

Code:
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-3538.20070629.B7vXa/iPhone1,1_1.0_1A543a_Restore.ipsw

/* ADMIN EDIT: NEW URL for 1.1 */

Code:

/*EDIT END */

This ipsw file is actually a zip file. Rename it .zip and unarchive. You will get two disk images, a system software dmg and a user dmg (from what I can tell). The system software dmg is password protected

Hm mm....I do agree that Iphone got a huge selection of new and interesting features. But it still lacks some features that sound to be essential.

  1. Although it got a 2 MP camera, there is no Video recording on Iphone. We cant even send video MMS either as there is no recording.
  2. There is no Instant Messaging feature(IM).
  3. It should not be called a complete Ipod replacement, you don't have any games.
  4. There are no custom ring tones, You cant have ring tones of your own. This is one of the most lacking feature.
  5. Not all Ipod accessories and headsets will fit for the iphone.
  6. It is stuck to AT&T for a contract of 2 years.
  7. There is no GPS.
  8. It isn't a Smart phone, people should start developing applications for it.
  9. It is not for business use ad there's no push email except for Yahoo Mail. There is Exchange support, but it's just using IMAP access.
  10. The data connection being a bit slow.

I agree that Iphone is one of the sexiest phone on the market, but even it too lack some features that sounds important to some people.

It was amazing that apple have sold 700,000 Iphones in the 1st weekend.

Well, the first reviews are in. But you may have missed some of the more interesting factoids unearthed by the trio of gadget reporters deigned worthy by El Jobso to get a pre-launch iPhone. Here's a few fresh n' interesting iPhone facts right off the presses:

The mobile version of OS X or whatever it is the iPhone runs takes up 700MB of the device's capacity. Damn son!

There's no way to cut, copy, or paste text! WHOA! Big, big mistake.

No A2DP support. That, friends, is such a huge bummer right there.

Sorry, music can't be used as a ringtone -- even if it's just a raw MP3. No additional ringtones will be sold at launch.

On a PC the iPhone syncs with Outlook for calendars AND addresses! Noice.

It supports Exchange in some capacity, according to Walt, but he doesn't exactly say how.

Pogue again confirms document file reading -- but not editing -- for PDF, Word, and Excel (only).

Adobe Flash support is officially out. It's just not in the browser. Neither is there any other kind of embedded video support. Sorry everybody, that's that.

It will take snaps, but won't record video. How can Apple love YouTube as much as it does and not realize cellphone-shot movies make up a sizeable chunk of the crazy crap you find on there? More after the break!

Oh, and no MMS. And sorry, no voice dialing, either.

Contact groups can't be emailed as contact lists.

Apple sez between 300-400 charges the iPhone will lose battery capacity -- you'll send it in and get the cell replaced for a fee. Meh. We knew this would be the case, but still, meh.

Apple can (and supposedly will) be rolling out periodic updates -- no surprise there.

Battery life is, somehow, almost as mind-blowingly good as Apple claims for calls, music, and movies.

As we suspected, users are prompted with lists of WiFi networks if you're not nearby a trusted hotspot.

We've seen this on other phones, and we're afraid this would get friggin annoying.

It's said to be very scratch resistant. The facade both front and rear apparently just doesn't pick up marring like regular iPods do.

Voice quality is said to be good -- not great.Anything else we missed from in there?
